North America
Regional Immigration Detention Profile
The detention of asylum seekers and migrants is a growing concern in North America, particularly the USA. A recent IDC report found that there has been large increases in raids by the Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) on undocumented migrants, leading to half a million people detained each year, the fastest growing prison population in the USA. In addition almost 350,000 were removed in the past 12 months alone, and a growing climate of fear is developing in migrant communities. Detention was found to impact directly on children, including the impact of interior raids, deportation practice and detention of unaccompanied minors and the separation of family members. See below for the latest regional news, resources and developments.
