How to become a member of the International Detention Coalition PDF Print E-mail

We are a coalition of non-governmental groups, academic institutions, research centres and individuals working around the world to provide legal, social and other services, to carry out research and reporting, and to do advocacy and policy work on behalf of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants in detention.  The overall purpose of the coalition is to raise awareness of detention policies and practices around the world and to promote the use of international and regional human rights standards and principles as they relate to the detention of asylum seekers, refugees and migrants.

Non-governmental organizations, universities, academics, research centres and individuals who meet the following criteria can become members of the International Detention Coalition:

  • Agree with the mission, principles and values of the network;
  • Agree to respect the diverse views and opinions within the membership and to look for respectful ways of communicating concerns and resolving disagreements and conflicts;
  • Are involved in providing legal, social, pastoral and other services, carrying out research and reporting, and/or doing advocacy and policy work on behalf of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants subject to detention.

Membership is not extended to political parties or to governmental individuals or institutions.

In order to apply, please complete the Application for Membership and return it to .  Currently, there are no fees for membership.  The application will be submitted to the coordinator of the International Coalition and decisions on membership will be made by the Steering committee for the International Coalition.
