Thousands of unaccompanied or separated children arrive and claim asylum in the U.K. each year. Many of them survive arduous journeys from persecutors and war zones in a search for safety; some flee abusive treatment by family or close associates; others seek escape from human traffickers. This phenomenon presents a challenge to the Government and highlights its ambivalent attitude to international human rights law.
