IDC Annual Report 2023-2024

March 17, 2025

IDC’s 2023-24′ annual report details our activities during the reporting year.

Migration patterns have continued to surge this year as millions of people and families seek refuge from conflict, economic instability and climate-related disasters. Against this backdrop, we continue to see a trend towards the politicisation of migration in different parts of the world, accompanied by the criminalisation of migrants and migration expressed through the increased use of immigration detention, pushbacks, externalisation of borders and forced returns.

These restrictive measures — coupled with rising xenophobia and a disconnect between migration policy and evidence — underscore the need for global solidarity and action towards humane, rights-based approaches to migration. They also highlight the importance of taking steps to end immigration detention and replace criminalisation trends with a new paradigm based on rights, safe migration pathways and dignity.

Amidst these challenges, promising practices and solutions-based approaches are emerging, offering some hope. With continued commitment and collaboration, there remains significant potential to expand these efforts and create a future where human rights are upheld and immigration detention becomes a thing of the past.
