The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, has strongly highlighted the need for alternatives to detention for  children in her speech at the 19th Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva in March.

The High Commissioner stated in her speech-
‘Following the conclusions of a global round table on alternatives to immigration detention, organised by my Office in partnership with UN High Commissioner for Refugees, I call on Member States to explore effective alternatives to immigration detention, particularly for children and other vulnerable groups of migrants’
