Defence for Children International, together with the Anti-Torture Initiative (ATI), the World Organization against Torture (OMCT), and the Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT), cordially invites you to participate, on Monday 7 March 2016, to the side-event on the “Effective monitoring of child detention facilities”, organized on the occasion of the 31st Session of the Human Rights Council (HRC).

The very first European Practical Guide on the monitoring of child detention facilities will be presented. The Practical Guide is a monitoring tool with a child sensitive and preventive perspective, based a on a child specific approach, and designed to monitor violations of human rights in child detention facilities.

The Guide is the result of the DCI-led project “Children’s Rights Behind Bars,” which demonstrates that monitoring bodies rarely focus specifically on child detention facilities.

Following the presentation of the Guide, a panel of international experts will discuss and identify the various opportunities for use and cross-pollination of the Guide in other regions.

The event is sponsored by the Council of Europe, and the Permanent Missions of Belgium and Austria to the UNOG.

*UNOG accreditation is required to enter the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, and to attend the side-event.
