GENEVA (9 April 2014) – Following a successful Human Rights Council side event entitled “A Global Strategy to End Child Immigration Detention” held in
Geneva, Switzerland
on 14 March 2014, the IDC- together with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR)-convened a multi-stakeholder meeting of child rights advocates from across the UN system and key civil society organisations to form an Inter-Agency Working Group (IAWG) on child immigration detention.
This newly-formed partnership will work together on a global strategy towards ending immigration detention of children within a 5 year framework, looking to put the immigration detention of children on the Post 2015 development agenda.
The groups first activity will take place in June in Geneva at the next session of the UN Human Rights Council.
