The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants, François Crépeau, has concluded his first official visit to Sri Lanka.

Although his visit was focused mainly on migration from Sri Lanka, the Special Rapporteur visited Mirihana detention center (on the outskirts of Colombo) and Boossa prison (near Galle) where immigration detainees are held.

The Special Rapporteur issued this statement  about his visit and expressed his “regret [over] the policy of mandatory administrative detention of irregular migrants, with no individual assessment, no maximum time limit, no alternatives to detention, and the detention of families with children”.

The Special Rapporteur will present a comprehensive report of the visit to the UN Human Rights Council in June 2015.
