The IDC joins with UNHCR and others in welcoming Turkey’s new legislation, the Law on Foreigners and International Protection, which was recently adopted by the Turkish Government.

The new law incorporates key elements of international humanitarian and human rights law.

It provides for the establishment, under the Ministry of the Interior, of a specialised institution to manage international protection. This institution will also prepare the implementing regulations over the next year.

The IDC would urge the Turkish government to ensure, that in this next period of transition and implementation, every effort is made in legislation and practice to limit and prevent unnecessary immigration detention and for alternatives to detention to be explored and developed.
