This year two IDC staff attended the UNHCR NGO Consultations, Director Grant
Mitchell and Advocacy Coordinator Ben Lewis, with Advocacy Intern Frances
Moran. The theme was women’s leadership and participation, recognizing that the
numbers of female refugees are increasing worldwide.
A session was held on monitoring
immigration detention, with panel
members including Tanya Norton from
the Association for Prevention from
Torture (APT), IDC Director Grant
Mitchell, Junita Calder from the
Jesuit Refugee Service, Karin Keil
from the Hotline for Migrant Workers and Alice Edwards the senior legal
coordinator of the Division of International Protection, UNHCR with Alice Farmer
from Human Rights Watch as chair for the event. The session was a great success,
with high attendance and participation and the IDC are very excited for further
progress on monitoring places of immigration detention from this point.
The APT, IDC and UNHCR have just released a new publication on monitoring
administrative detention, which is a practical guide for monitors.
