Sur – International Journal on Human Rights , a Conectas Human Rights project, welcomes contributions to be published in its coming issues. The Sur Journal is published twice a year, distributed free of charge to approximately 2,700 readers in over 100 countries. It is edited in three languages: English, Portuguese and Spanish and can also be accessed online.

UN: Special Rapporteur on the Right to Education Request for Input

Questionnaire from the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Education of Persons in Detention

The annual report of the Special Rapporteur Vernor Muñoz on the right to education to be presented to the Human Rights Council in 2009 will focus on the right to education of persons in detention. The purpose of this questionnaire is to solicit cooperation from all relevant parties to assist in the preparation of the report by providing relevant information, materials and comment.

In order for the information received to be used for the next report of the Special Rapporteur, submission of responses is encouraged as soon as possible and no later than 31 December 2008.

OHCHR Launch of Dignity and Justice for Detainees Week

As part of the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights calls on all partners to pay special attention to the civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights of persons deprived of their liberty in prisons and other places of detention.

The High Commissioner has proposed that the week of 6 – 12 October 2008 be designated as Dignity and Justice for Detainees Week.

IDC Recommendations to States- Global Forum on Migration and Development 2008

IDC Detention Concerns raised at the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD), Manila, Philippines, 2008

The IDC attended the GFMD as part of the civil society days as a formal delegate. While there was criticism regarding the structure of the GFMD, lack of effective interaction between civil society and governments and the need for it to be put under a UN mandate, the IDC had the opportunity to raise the issue of detention of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants, with a statement made and supported by a number of delegates, particularly on children in detention.
