The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has put out a request for information on immigration detention as part of a questionnaire that will assist in the elaboration of their 2014 Annual Overview of the human rights situation in the hemisphere. The questionnaire addresses various topics from citizen insecurity to migration and includes four questions related to detention and alternatives. Immigration detention has become a topic of great concern for both the Commission and civil society organizations throughout the region, as demonstrated by the Thematic Hearing on Immigration Detention and Alternatives held during the 153rd Period of Sessions in October 2014. The hearing was requested by the IDC together with 162 members and partners and as such, we consider the inclusion of immigration detention in the annual report to be a direct result of this regional initiative. We applaud the Commission’s commitment to continue to investigate the issue of immigration detention and promote alternatives to detention.

The Commission invites States and civil society to submit their responses to this questionnaire providing examples of the most emblematic issues that demonstrate patterns or obstacles, as well as good practices, by February 23, 2015.
